NYCB’s Ashley Bouder answers our fun quickfire questions.
QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS
Black Swan, White Swan or Swanilda?
Black Swan.
Favourite piece or role that you have danced?
The Firebird.
Preferred pointe shoe brand?
Bloch.
If you could dance any male role, what would it be and which female would partner you?
I would probably wanna do something crazy like Corsaire or Flames of Paris or Diana and Acteon. And I would want to do it with Viangsay Valdez, who would balance and be amazing during the pas de deux, so that I could save myself for my cool solo!
If you were challenged to a dance-off, name 3 people to be in your crew?
Amar Ramasar, Justin Peck and Alexa Maxwell. Alexa is a corps dancer in City Ballet, but she’s got some moves. And she’s got a lot of spunk.
What’s your favourite bagel spot in NYC?
My new favourite is the bagel shop on the corner of my street. Crafted Bagel. I get cinnamon raisin with strawberry cream cheese.
What’s a ballet exercise you find particularly helpful?
Rond de jambes à terre – but with the foot just off the floor, not en l’air – and letting go and finding your balance on your supporting leg while opening your hips and moving your leg from front to back and back to front.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
My husband said Natalie Portman. She’s about my age. She’s a little shorter than me but we know she can dance. And she’s won an Academy Award and knows the dance world!

March 3, 2016 at 12:26 amWell, we don’t know that Natalie Portman can dance since Sarah Lane was her dance double and it was she who did pretty much 100% of the dancing in Black Swan.
