Juliet Doherty is one of the new rising stars of ballet. As many have observed, she seems to have been built for classical dance, with her endless extensions and beautifully arched feet. But in the world of ballet, being biologically blessed means very little without the requisite hard work to learn how to use your gifts to your advantage. And despite a rocky relationship with the art when she was younger, Juliet’s commitment to the art has seen her star…
Ballet
Despite his prolific body of work, Edward Degas is most commonly associated with his ballet-inspired pieces, from his famous Little Dancer sculpture to his many peintures de ballerines. In the same way he was fascinated with ballet, Degas’ art continue to fascinate and inspire in many ways and forms – from a well-known French leotard brand named after him to, most recently, a bound-for-Broadway musical based on an interpretation of his Little Dancer sculpture. Sometimes you can look at art and…
Interview – Mary Puart, Vaganova Ballet Academy
Posted on December 12, 2014Masha is a student training at the famed Vaganova Ballet Academy in St Petersburg, a place many an aspiring dancer speaks of with undertones of reverence. To a lot of people, the Vaganova Academy may seem like a faraway place buried in the vastness of Russia, one that people know of only through photos or online videos of their prodigious students with their impossible technique and impeccably turned-out feet. But Masha is assuredly as much a 17-year-old as any other.…
Quickfire Questions – Tristan Dyer
Posted on November 14, 2014Tristan Dyer is a well-travelled man – from America to Australia to Canada, he’s been there, danced that, training at schools all over the world. But where he is now, at London’s famed Royal Ballet is where he feels at home. And he looks it too. Tristan graduated from the Royal Ballet School in 2009 and funnelled straight into the company where he was most recently promoted to soloist rank this year. Watching videos of him rehearsing for Liam Scarlett’s…
Ballet dancers get to wear their fair share of interesting and sometimes outlandish costumes. But we still couldn’t resist putting some of them in outfits they’re unlikely to wear on stage any time soon – or any time at all, period.…
C&V Photo Sessions: A Morning at the Kremlin Ballet
Posted on October 24, 2014It’s 11am on a sunny Moscow day and I’m standing outside the Press Office of the Kremlin Ballet. “Singapore…” the lady behind the glass-panelled counter sighs when she sees my passport, and disappears to the back of the office.…
It seems that the tempestuous Sergei Polunin, will be the bad boy of ballet no more. According to the Russian media, he’s decided a change is in the wind and it’s blowing him in the direction of Hollywood, where he’s attempting to launch an acting career. We dreamt up what some popular movies would be like if Mr. Polunin were starring in them.…
Demelza Parish talks pointe shoes and awkward stage moments in our quickfire questions. Read our full interview with Demelza here.…
We’d put money on Demelza Parish being made from bottled sunshine. Delightfully ebullient, she’s a package of charm backed by substance – and she dances too. From childhood Swan Queen dreams, she worked her way into the famous halls of White Lodge, the Royal Ballet’s Lower School and at 17, was awarded a contract to dance at the Royal Ballet. Since then, she’s become a stalwart of the Royal’s corps de ballet, dancing countless Swan Lakes, Manons and Giselles, a Flower…
After the premiere episode of Breaking Pointe on America’s CW channel, everyone had an opinion on Allison DeBona. Most of these opinions weren’t flattering. Breaking Pointe was a show that followed the dancers of Ballet West, under the banner of their leader/artistic director/big daddy Adam Sklute. And Allison DeBona, a Ballet West dancer and one of the show’s main characters, was seen by many as, to put it mildly, not a particularly nice person. (The word ‘bitch’ was bandied about.) …
New York Magazine recently ran a ‘day in the life’ photo essay featuring David Hallberg. While it’s great to get a peek into the daily routine of the Bolshoi/ABT principal (he planks! He’s human after all!), we were mostly impressed by his range of beautifully bemused faces.…
This World Cup has been nothing if not vastly entertaining, and seemingly passed all too quickly. We’ve enjoyed being able to celebrate an awesome tournament with the Balleternet by combining two of our favourite things – ballet and football – in our Footballet series.…
